Story Starters

We use carefully selected stories to provide a starter to learning across the curriculum. The children become immersed in a story for a period of two or three weeks and the teachers plan different activities which link to aspects of the story and help the children learn important skills and knowedge. The children learn new and exciting words from the story.

The stories build up over time and children have opportunity to think back to previous learning from stories and build upon this.

The children get to know the story so well, they can talk about the characters and settings and what happens next. They also tackle maths challenges or problems linked to the story. This gives the children a sense of purpose to their learning.

We have carefully selected different stories which provide opportunities to find out about different things such as animals and minibeasts, the seasons and changing weather, different people, colours and patterns. We include traditional tales which children always love and stories by key authors such as Julia Donaldson and Eric Carle.
